Second Six Weeks Writing Assignments:

Expository Writing (Descriptive)

Procedural Writing:

1. Students began by writing ten steps to take in evacuating a classroom or their home in the event of a fire or tornado. We had just finished reading a Procedural piece on Emergencies.
2. Students took those ten steps and put them in sentences creating a paragraph or two.
3. Students then added an introduction and conclusion for this essay. They applied revision and then wrote the final draft.

First Six Weeks Writing Assignments:

The Imaginative Story: Begin September 21, 2010


1. Quick Writes: Teacher gives a topic and students think of a plot and conflict for the topic. We will do three or four of these and discuss.
2. Brainstorm: Look at What If questions and brainstorm ideas; choose one
3. Notes on Short Story Elements and Writing Notes
4. Computer Lab: Thursday, September 16 and Friday, September 17: complete pre-writing with interactive website at
readwritethink.org where students will fill out the following documents and print:
Character Map (2) - protagonist and antagonist Conflict Map
Setting Map Resolution Map
Plot Diagram
5. Bio Poem: students will create a poem about a character and type: Quiz grade
6. Rough Draft: students will write story and complete by Wed., September 29
7. Peer Editing: Wed., 9/29
8. Final Draft: type in lab on Friday, October 1, 2010

2. Box Summary – new sheet of paper-title at top due 9/9

· Paragraph for each event

o Setting (place, time, where, when)

o Who (people-names, relationships)

o Feeling I experienced (descriptive adjectives)

o What I learned/realized

3. Illlustration – top event choice -due 9/9

· Draw a picture of your event – detailed picture

4. What I Did! due 9/9

· Think of your actions from the beginning to the end of the event and describe them using VIVD ACTION VERBS in your sentences.

· Underline each ACTION VERB-NO repeats!

· You should have 7-10 action verbs.

5. Open Mind: 5-7 thoughts you had during/regarding this incident --due 9/9

6. Open Heart: 5 feelings/emotions related to the event -due 9/9

7. T Chart Dialogue – create a conversation with someone from your event. Due 9/9

· You should have 4-6 lines TOTAL

8. What I Realized, Understood, Learned – Exclamation Point
Rough Draft: Write a 3 paragraph essay (Beginning, Middle, End)
- Make revisions on your essay from the yellow Ratiocination sheet to make sure you all have required elements.Final Draft will be written in class on Friday, 9/17.
